In 2020, I began creating small oil portrait sketches on recycled food packaging as a means to keep busy during the COVID lock down. The small paintings were in reaction to images produced by the AI-driven website thispersondoesnotexist.com.
Over the course of making hundreds of these small paintings, I began reflecting on AI's ability to generate vast amounts of photo-realistic imagery very quickly, standing in stark contrast to to my own, human-made images.
I started to think about what an analog, human version of an AI generated image might look like; making images through a very slow process, building individual facets (pixels) to “generate” unique images.
Thus, the Generator series was born. Four paintings made of readily available art making and building supplies. Each piece is a unique, imperfect meditation on what it is to be human in an ever-more digital world.
